Because of a law by the British Parliament, the only English Bibles in the colonies were imported from Europe or England. During the War for Independence, free from this restriction, Americans began looking to finally print an English language Bible.
In January 1781, Robert Aitken (publisher of the Pennsylvania Magazine in Philadelphia) petitioned Congress for permission to print an English-language Bible on his presses in America. Congress appointed a committee, comprised of Founding Fathers James Duane, Thomas McKean, and John Witherspoon, to review his Bible. The committee reported back to Congress in September of 1782 giving the approval of both Congressional chaplains as well as the committee itself. Congress then gave Aitken a ringing endorsement in the form of a resolution which he chose to print in the front of his Bible--known as the "Aitken Bible" or "the Bible of the Revolution."
There were only 10,000 of these Bibles originally printed, so the chance to own a page from this rare Bible is an amazing opportunity! We have a very limited quantity, but we wanted to make them available for as many of our followers as we could. Once these are gone, there are no more.
